So you think to yourself …
I am a successful chartered account. I have a wonderful wife, 2 kids, dog and a goldfish and have 2 holidays a year. Life is comfortable, safe and good.”
 
Then your boss tells you the end of year office party is going to involve a DRUMKiDZ drum workshop. Your stomach turns involuntarily as you see a movie playing in your head… you were in the school orchestra playing triangle at the age of 10, after 23 minutes of the song it was your big moment and just as you are about to strike your instrument and enjoy the glow of recognition your foot slips and you miss.
The conductor glares at you and shakes his head in disgust. It was the only and last time that you played (or rather didn’t) play an instrument.
 
The big day arrives, your palms are sweaty, an involuntary twitch starts in your left eye.
To your horror as you enter the room, you can’t hide in the back row…there is no back row. The chairs are arranged in a semi-circle around the DRUM Motivator’s chair and everyone can see everyone else. You sit down and when asked with a show of hands you feel a small sense of relief as 99% of the office agrees that they believe that they have no rhythm whatsoever. Then the warm up starts, its physical, it’s a bit weird, everyone is looking at one another and you feel the heat of a blush rise up your neck.
 
Then you start to drum along, you’re encouraged to really dig in and put your full energy and focus on what you are doing right in that moment. Momentarily you forget about what others might be thinking of you, you forget about work, the mortgage, and even the wife and kids take a backburner.

Editorial March 2011

In 2004, my wife Rosemary and I were wondering how to introduce our two young sons (then aged two and three) to music in a fun, energetic and creative way.
Rose suggested trying African Djembe drumming for our kids. Having moved from London to South Africa in 1995 to set up a commercial recording studio, it seemed like a great idea. As a professional kit drummer and music producer, I set about creating a music programme teaching the basic foundations of rhythm and music for kids aged three and up. After running a successful pilot trial for six months in five schools, DRUMKiDZ was officially launched in 2005.

Since then, over 5000 kids aged 3 to 8 have gone through the programme in Cape Town alone and the DRUMKiDZ music development school programme now consists of over 25 drumming stories, 60 songs and dozens of drumming games.  So we say a huge thank you to all of the parents and schools that give us the wonderful opportunity of teaching your children every week around the country!

We are so proud to have DRUMKiDZ franchisees in four other locations around SA…Helderberg, Port Elizabeth, Table View and Durban, in addition to our Cape Town Head Office. This means that our dream of spreading the incredible benefits of the programme to thousands and thousands of children becomes closer as we continue to expand nationwide with the development of our franchise network. Drumming Puts Hairs on ya chest

It really does – I have to shave mine at least once a week now!
And it’s all down to Djembe drumming…

There really is something very special and magical about sitting in a room with a load of people and getting your hands busy on a tradition African djembe drum. You may have never met any of the group before in your life, or they could be family, friends, or work colleagues. You know what… it does not matter.

After just 5 to 10 minutes of drumming away, people relax, let go and every possible barrier, limitation or divide is dropped. I know it sounds corny but as one of the busiest drum facilitators in the Cape, I get the coolest experience of witnessing and being a part of this incredible activity daily.

Djembe drumming helps the brain to change brain wave patterns from our usual rather frantic beta cycle to a slower alpha brain wave pattern. This state allows us to feel more relaxed, focused, giving greater access to the right side of the brain where creativity is accessed and harnessed. The energy release and endorphin rush is readily experienced while playing and there is a lifted sense of excitement…it just feels great. Your hands might feel a bit stuffed it you’re not use to it but it is so worth it. As you get more experienced and start playing multiple syncopated rhythms with others, you start to really feel a connection with those around you. It’s a better ice breaker than the Titanic and you’ll live to tell the tale.

So its brilliant for the brain, you’ll feel relaxed yet strangely elated at the same time. But another very welcome side effect of all this hand drumming is that after many a month of practicing your new found art and joining a DRUMKiDZ drum workshop, you can develop Madonna style arms and a grip that Tiger Woods would be salivating over. Drumming makes ya dead fit. It works for the guys and the ladies…let’s face it we can all benefit from some extra rhythm and fit bod to boot.

MUSICAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME @ SCHOOLS

Term 1

Term 1 is nearly completed – gosh where did the term go?  We have covered many stories, games and songs such as Another Ordinary Day, Nellie the Elephant, Jungle Drums etc.  We hope your children have come home with enthusiasm and are now drumming a happily on your pots…

We are running the special on Djembe Drums until the end of March so if your pots are now taking a hammering  how about buying a drum – see above for the specials

Term 2

Term 2 is a very short term due to the 2010 World Cup soccer, therefore we will be starting Term 2 DRUMKiDZ within the first week of Term beginning week 12th April with the exception Monday classes which will start on the 19th April. 

This term the KiDZ will be drumming and singing along to our own original adventure stories & songs from our range of interactive DRUMKiDZ CDs…The Adventures of DRUMKiDZ. So your Childs own musical journey will rocket along with our time traveling heroes back to the time of the dinosaurs, then to the future with a planet full of robots, then back again to fight the Sea Serpent and finally help King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table get Excalibur from the stone. Your kidz would love to drum along to these stories at home

Once again please remember that payment is due prior to each term.  Any outstanding fees please pay immediately.   We thank the parents that pay on time and regularly.  Our fees are R 285 per term and registration for the year is R 95.

School Programme 2010 – Welcome new & existing parents

Thousands and thousands of children have taken part in our music development programme for schools and we are delighted that so many parents recognize the importance of this powerful activity for our children.

Over the coming year the children on the DRUMKiDZ School programme  will drum and sing along to over 25 drumming stories, 50 songs & dozens of drumming games. Next term we will be focusing on drumming to our own original adventure stories & songs from our range of interactive educational DRUMKiDZ CDs – the kids love them!

Please note that your child’s introductory DRUMKiDZ gift will be given to them before the end of this term as long as your fees are paid up to date.

Let’s put this into some perspective – I recently saw a drum just like the ones in our 2010 Specials selling for R1200 in a shop – but you can buy one of our authentic hand carved drums from Ghana for just R350!

How can we do it? Why do we do it? We buy in bulk directly from the largest drum supplier to the Cape – as to the why – it’s simple… we want as many kids out there to drum and sing along to our stunning educational  but serious fun drumming CDs so they can reap the benefits.
